Akiva Academy
has been serving the Jewish Community in Calgary for over 24 years. We offer an
outstanding program of General Studies and Judaic Studies in a stimulating
and nurturing environment for students in nursery through grade six.
Akiva Academy
offers the highest level of academic education and is an accredited Alberta school. Our
General Studies curriculum is customized by our staff to fit the individual
students needs using the Albert Learning curriculum. Our Judaic curriculum is
a personalized program, which follows the Torah Umesorah guidelines for day
schools in North America
General School Philosophy
The goal of Akiva
Academy is to produce students
who encompass good middot (character traits) with a devotion to learning and
a sense of Jewish pride and values. It is our purpose to offer the finest,
most rigorous and challenging religious and secular education to all of our
students.
We recognize that all children are individuals and have different needs.
It is also our belief that individual methods of learning are necessary in
order to educate our students. Therefore our teachers treat each child as an
individual and are cognizant of each one’s special needs. Our teachers
are committed to facilitate the appropriate accommodations when necessary.
Educational Philosophy
Akiva Academy is a coeducational, Nursery
through Grade Six, Jewish, dual curriculum school, committed to providing its
students with an excellent education in both Judaic and General studies. The
goal is to produce young men and women with the skills, knowledge, and
understanding they need to be successful in the Judaic and General arenas in
which they live. Our small class sizes allow teachers to individualize their
instruction based on the child’s needs and learning styles. We foster a
warm and nurturing environment where all children are able to maximize their
potential.
General Studies
Akiva Academy
is an accredited Alberta
School where a
dedicated and committed professional faculty delivers the Alberta Learning
curriculum. The General studies curriculum focuses on the four core subjects:
Language Learning, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. We believe in a
hands-on approach where children are active participants in their learning.
Akiva’s curriculum exceeds the Alberta Learning standards with the
many enhancement programs* that enable our students to extend and expand
their knowledge and ability beyond the required Alberta Learning material.
Results from CTBS tests and the Provincial Achievement Exams show that on
average our students score consistently above the expected norms.
*For more details on enhancement programs see the "Programs and
Services" section of this website
Judaic Studies
The Judaic Studies curriculum is a personalized program, which follows
Torah Umesorah guidelines. Our Judaic Studies program or Limudai Kodesh
focuses on the study of Chumash, The Oral Torah, Navi, and Halacha (Jewish
Law). We believe that Judaism needs to be lived and not just learnt.
Therefore we incorporate Halachik concepts into daily lives of our students
as well as emphasizing Midot and our commitment to Eretz Yisrael (The Land of
Israel).
Hebrew Language Program
The second component of our Judaic Studies curriculum is Hebrew Language.
We put a great emphasis on teaching Hebrew to all the children. Solid skills
in Hebrew Language are essential to the study of Tanach and related
commentaries, Hebrew literature, to visiting or living in Israel, and
to communicating with Jews worldwide. The study of Hebrew concentrates on the
following areas: grammar, spelling and vocabulary, and the development of
conversation and reading skills. It is our goal to impart our students with
the flavour of the language and its unique character with the hope that
through this knowledge their love of learning and Midinat Israel will
increase.
